Fast and furious

I do not ordinarily do action movies, but agreed to go with a friend. I jumped into Fast and furious 7 (movie) even though I had not seen 1 - 6. It was preposterous! In retrospect, it was all about fights, explosions and car crashes....and nobody ever DIED?!?! They got out of these smashed cars like it was a walk in the park. Rarely did anyone bleed or complain.
the PREVIEWS were hard to take, especially the one for the redo of Mad Max. What a disgusting movie!

Jersey Angel (audio book), by Beth Ann Bauman. I picked up this young adult book cause it was about the Jersey shore. Not my shore, I am pretty sure. The town is unnamed but it seemed like Long Beach Island area. Boy, these high school students were pretty dissipated...drinking, drugging, smoking and sleeping around. Angel was a bit of a loser with no goals. She wasn't very likeable. She made some bad decisions but vowed to do better in the end.

A very dreary day. Drizzle and back to being cold. At least my ceiling does not seem to be dripping onto my table.

Today I went on an excursion all alone

I need to get "away" once a week. That means doing different things and seeing different sites. I do this best all alone. Then I can stop and turn when I want without having to justify or explain to another person. Drove down to a movie theater I have been to before to see an "art film"...Still Alice. Stopped at a new restaurant on the way down. Johnnie's breakfast and lunch in Mays Landing had juke boxes on the walls. They were not working but still. Did we ever dream that someday we would all be carrying around tiny jukeboxes of our own in our pockets?

The theater is out of the way. In fact there is no way to get back on the highway going the direction I wanted to go in. The cost of the Senior citizen ticket was 75 cents less than the Regal in Vineland. The cost of the popcorn was $1 MORE. I bought a box of candy for $4.01.
I liked that they had the name of the movie and the starting time above the door of each theater. Also the theater was WARM. (I haven't been warm in days!) There was a bird in there but he didn't attack anyone. The theater sits all alone in a big parking lot bordered by woods. There is an Outback steakhouse out there next to it. I will definitely be going back even though it takes over an hour to get there. On Tuesdays, you can get in for $6 before 6 PM.

The strange library (book), by Haruki Murakami. Seems like it should be young adult, but it wasn't at the Vineland Public Library. Translated from the Japanese, it is like an art book, with a page of type across from a design. The type is like really huge typewriter type and the pages fit in a fold. Of course, I had to get it because it about a LIBRARY. Kind of a fantasy library adventure of a young boy.

Bad things happening

Not even talking about the WORLD...things are tough in our little town. MOST recently a home invasion that left a 94 year old man beaten on the floor until someone discovered him 12 hours later. And a homeless Mexican man found beaten to death outdoors. And now we have demonstrators making a commotion about a real thug killed in a traffic stop by two of our policemen trying to keep the lawlessness under control around here. Where is the balance between civil rights and law and order?

Things have evolved and gotten way more complicated since the days of Selma. Saw that movie yesterday with a gang of 5 women friends. Simplified emotions said that black people were good and white people were evil and hateful. I do not recall all of the events....I only retain the memory of how much I hated George Wallace.

And another week begins

Pleasures and annoyances already on this Monday morning.
Pleasures:
- yoga
- getting up at usual time of 8:45 AM
- Sam Smith CD, In the lonely night, on Hoopla sharing service at library
- sound is really good today through my phone headphones
Annoyances:
- loud people at library disturbing my peace
- had to get outfit out of dirty laundry basket and I am noticing clothes have been worn too long
- hungry but have to stay on computer to get my two hours
- rain

Not much on calendar today....just yoga and helping the homeless tonight. Spent the weekend running around so it is OK with me.

Tried to watch a DVD on my computer this week. DVD was acting up. Will return it and get another before I start complaining about the DVDs. Having worked in Technical Services in a library, I know all about people who complain about the DVDs when the problem is really due to their equipment. We used to WATCH videos and DVDs looking for the problems.

Easing on into the weekend

Don't know how I am going to fit exercise back into my life. Now that I have lapsed. Not too much time left over after I get enough sleep, get online and be with my friends.

Listening to Into the woods and a Joe Cocker album on Hoopla, the library borrowing database. Just saw the movie of Into the woods yesterday and Joe Cocker died this week. There is no connection between the two.

It is a rainy, gray, dreary day in January. I MUST plan a getaway...maybe drive my home-away-from-home? Need sun and warmth and blue skies.

Resolutions or to do list?

So, it is January 2nd and I haven't organized my January calendar pages. Nor have I made any New Year's resolutions. Maybe I should list ACCOMPLISHMENTS of 2014 first.

Lucky us (audio book), by Amy Bloom. Didn't really like this book much or was it the reader? A lot of weird stuff goes on during the era of the second World War. Not much thinking or describing, just stuff happening.

Sunny today, but a bit cold. Listening to the soundtrack of the new movie, Into the woods, which I plan to see later today.

Will I continue reading this series?

Maybe not. There are often some preposterous things that go on in a book involving humans, daemons, witches and vampires. A discovery of witches (audio book), by Deborah Harkness. The first in a series which includes SOME of my favorite subjects, such as books, libraries, history and French. Sentences like, "The library will be whatever the witches want it to be" don't make a whole lot of sense. Our witch masquerading as a human attracts the attention of a French vampire in the Bodleian library at Oxford University. A complicated plot ensues to find out why a particular book seems to be under a spell and can only be broken by Diana. Things only get worse since vampire/witch relationships are forbidden.

Am very pleased with the wreath I made yesterday. I couldn't wait to come home and put it on my front door. Took a nice picture and texted it to my sisters. Have only heard back from one of them. Not sure if the others are accepting/checking text messages. Getting to know my new phone is a slow process.

Waiting around the library to see the movie on movie night. Afraid that I have already seen it. All I knew was that it was in German. Seeing fewer and fewer films these days but I did see quite a few back in the day. Seems like I have missed months and months of this film discussion series. I am one of the few loyal attendees until I am not.

Too many sweets

Have been eating too much...a snack every hour. Big lunch with an exercise group. Now another dinner meeting tonight. Yesterday I broke my Diet Coke fast because I had a free beverage coupon at our local movie theater that was about to expire. So I had one GINORMOUS Diet Coke cause that is how they serve it there. Plan to get back on the wagon today. Had movie buttered popcorn for dinner and then we went to the dollar store and bought pints of Hagan-Daz to eat for our snack.

The drop (movie) - A bit more violent than I can cope with but it was a slow moving, suspenseful, seemingly-low-budget story of two small time hustlers in Brooklyn. Wanted to see it as was James Gandolfini's last film. Woman looked kind of familiar, but don't think I have seen her in anything. She was in the Swedish crime series films (American edition).

Chains (book), by Laurie Halse Anderson. A young adult book. One more book about slavery. Interesting twist as during the Revolutionary war and in New York City. Read it for a book club. Got better as it went along. Family who owns the two girls are Tory sympathizers and not very nice. Mother of the husband is nicer and slave girl and grandmother develop somewhat of a relationship. There is a story of a slave boy who follows the rebels and gets incarcerated. Isabel helps him and moves messages around town. There are some charming little turns of phrase....like her "remembery". "My head was broke and my sister was stole and I was lost" was the most poignant line.

In my computer haze

My ADD self enjoys getting involved in my computer chores. Stuff spread all around me, sitting in the air conditioned library, listening to Youtube (Anna Kendrick's Cups (Pitch `perfect's when I'm gone). I couldn't be happier!

The search (book), by Nora Roberts: The title refers to the profession of Fiona, who trains search and rescue dogs on Orcas Island. Also to the search for an abductor of women. I enjoyed the clever dialogue between Fiona and her new love interest. The evil parts were almost too evil, though. The audio book is particularly well done.

Off to another day of running around. Arthritis class, BP and RHR good, Vineland Public Library, then time for manicure and pedicure. Picking up a friend later to go see Tammy. Looks and sounds stupid but lots of famous people walking through and we have a good time at not-so-great movies.

Semi-famous people I have been told I look like

- Ali MacGraw (in her/my younger days)
- Jeanne Moreau (same downturned smile)
- Glenn Close (I never saw any resemblance)
- Laurie Metcalf (who plays Sheldon's mother in The big bang theory and Roseanne's sister in Roseanne) - (6/23/14)

Nice relaxing days in the air conditioned library looking up stuff as it strikes my fancy...Jersey boys, Laurie Metcalf, how to spell azalea, etc. Went to get a fig newton that I brought in but they had all been devoured.

Jersey boys (movie): directed by Clint Eastwood. Could see it again. All of the boys pretty charming, even the "bad" boy. I never felt that interested in going to see the play that others raved about so I finally got to see the movie. Fascinating. The family situations were a bit glossed over. Most of the focus was on the relationships between the band members. A bit of (suppressed) violence and interesting Jersey and mob references.

Crossing three things off of my list

Got online - a daily need (like sunshine). Completed arthritis class this AM. The good thing about an 8 AM exercise class is that you can cross it off the list. A friend took me out to breakfast and then we went to see the Muppets most wanted movie. Seeing a movie is a weekly goal of mine.

Big beat Miami 2014 (album), by David Guetta and a lot of friends. Enjoyable as techno background but no songs that really speak to me and say SAVE ME on Youtube.

Muppets most wanted (movie): Funny with lots of famous people on for about 3 minutes each and good songs. Then I went to Hoopla and was able to borrow the album, which made me very happy. Nice seeing the Muppets travel around the world as I like seeing the world. Went with a friend to the early show (11:35 AM) and we were the only people in there so we could laugh as loudly as we wanted to without bothering anyone. It is very disorienting to come out of the movie theater and it is only the middle of the afternoon. Particularly enjoyed Tina Fey. Usher was....an usher. We had to get the popcorn, even though we had just had breakfast, because it was $2 popcorn Tuesday.

On the turntable....

A feature I like from a Japanese blog I follow. Less glamorously, I only listen to music on Youtube....right now original With a little help from my friends, by Joe Cocker at Woodstock. Boy, what was he ON?

El mariachi (movie): Saw at Cinema series at the Bridgeton Public Library. Way too violent for my current day tastes, but the protagonist was charming and innocent and was forced through a case of mistaken identity to kill a lot of people who were trying to kill him. I saw it when it came out in the early 90's at the Philadelphia film festival.

Enjoyed Amish market yesterday. Breakfast and then ran into a bunch of people I knew. Quite a pleasant place. The Amish are so restful..which is weird cause I know they work very hard.

A heavenly day

Perhaps, maybe, Spring will actually SPRING some day soon?!?!? It is actually the first day of Spring. The Google doodle had to remind me of that. It seems that it is also National Happiness day. They seem to be creating more days at a rapid rate.

Sadly, the only three movies that I would be willing to see at our local theater are cartoons......Mr. Peabody and Sherman, The Lego movie and Muppets most wanted. All the others involve speed or violence or other distasteful topics.
Would like to get back to my one-movie-a-week policy but nothing really calls to me, except for $2 popcorn day which is Tuesday.

Returning some books today and picking up a book I had reserved at the Vineland Public Library. Getting organized with projects such as filling out questionnaire for jury duty and other stuff. Not real enthusiastic about jury duty. One of my issues is DECISION MAKING and that is what jury duty is all about. It is always educational as well as depressing so I guess I will go forward with it and not try to think up some excuse. Luckily, I can walk to the courthouse so I don't have to deal with the impossible parking situation. I COULD walk to a lot of places, I just DON'T.

I've decided that ALL guacamole is good

Having guacamole and birthday cake today. My ability to resist sweets has disappeared. These are the snack choices at work today.

It is a beautiful BRIGHT sunny day. Sun shining on snow makes BRIGHT. Wanted to go for a walk in my snow boots with my ski poles. But I want even more to sit here on my ass working on the computer. Cross country skis broke. Have two pairs of cross country boots and two pairs of skis but not compatible. Was going to use my ski poles as walking sticks but have not as yet.

My mood improves when the temperature approaches the freezing mark (on the way UP that is). We feel like survivors of a horrible experience that is WINTER. OK, it is not over yet, but more reasonable temps coming along. I like it when it freezes only because my ceiling stops leaking. Must go up in the attic and face (or find out about) the facts as it warms up.

Loved the movie Philomena. Had to get to the Mall this week as the slow, thoughtful movies do not last long around here. I keep thinking about it and the slow releasing of details which completed the circle. Very touching. I can still cry thinking about it. Then, last night, saw a film about Gaudi and a film about Louis Nevelson. The Gaudi film was narrated much too rapidly and we didn't even get a picture of him. The Nevelson film was much better as mostly was her talking and creating.

Christmas is now officially over

It is the 7th, even past three kings day. Saw a Christmas movie today (Madea). Time to put away the Christmas-themed return address labels and stickers. I think the last presents were exchanged today as well. Time to start dieting and exercising.

The cold is horrific - only consulation is that the sun is shining. Looking forward to getting home since I have been running around a lot. NOT looking forward to it, as my heat can't deal with the extreme cold. I turned the heat way down to give the heater a rest. A bill approaching $700 was delivered along with my oil yesterday. The wind is making it a bitterly cold day. Had to come out, however, for exercise class and Christmas breakfast date and movie and library visit. I guess it could be worse....I could live in Minnesota.

The good news is that I cross country skiied. The bad news is that my skis fell apart while traveling in my car. Read something on the Internet about the base peeling off of older skis that had not been properly cared for. Certainly my skis have not been cared for at all. There they sit, at the base of my steps, waiting for winter to roll around so I can try them out. This year, it worked, but now my skis are broken. Seems like much in my life has been ignored for so long that it disappears into dust. Sigh.....

What did I do for Earth day?

- I sent an ecard to someone who has a birthday today wishing her a happy Earth Day AND birthday.
- I picked up trash around the outside of my house.  None of it mine. Cigarette butts and other disgusting stuff.
- Going to a free film about the problems of the horseshoe crab and the redknot.  It is called Crash and will be showing at 6 PM at the Levoy theater in Millville.

My wish list has once again disappeared from Overdrive.  This is very aggravating as this is where I go when I need a new book for my Nook.  I have a theory and will investigate it.  Not that I don't already have enough books to read.

Feeling overwhelmed with my computer chores.  My folder of stuff to look up is getting thicker.  And my old emails more than a year old are looking too interesting to delete.  Seems like the past few days I have just been trying to fit in an hour here, and hour there and getting nowhere.

The shark bited him and he died

Six year olds have such an adorable way of speaking.  I just can't bring myself to correct their grammar.  Had breakfast with two adorable twins who are very affectionate.  Trying to notice the differences between them each time I get to see them.  Someone kissed me and said "I love you" but which one?  Today I learned that one of them just kisses the "BB" (a cross between a pillow and a stuffed animal).  The other one kisses "everybody".  Then he clarified...."Not everybody.  Just my family and my teacher."  So, I had ONE arm around O. (who was watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on his iPad) and one arm around D. (who was playing a sword fight game on HIS iPad).  Talk about cacophony!  Oh, they were both coughing and sniffling too so I hope I don't catch anything.  One of them wanted to kiss me ON THE LIPS.  I couldn't avoid such an offer!  Also watched part of The hobbit and some other hideous action movie from long ago.  Charmingly, when they first arrived in Fairton, they wanted to watch The Swiss family Robinson, the same movie we watched the LAST time they visited Fairton.

All the libraries are closed today (Good Friday).  Luckily I got into the Sweet life bakery (on Landis Avenue in Vineland, NJ) which is ONLY open Fridays and Saturdays now.  Unfortunately, they are cutting back more and more.  First, they stopped making breads and now they have stopped making soups and sandwiches and now they have cut way back on their hours.  Seems like a nice crowd is in and out today, anyway.

Went to a nutrition lecture and did some dances with the WII.  That was really fun.  The nutrition program was full of old people (I mean "actively aging" people).  Wonder if we get on the nerves of the people who work there.  I know we get on MY nerves.  A lot of characters who insist on putting in their "two cents".

Foiled again

Planned to spend three hours online today at the Bridgeton Public Library.  Even thought they have a nice big table to put my computer on and a soft chair, I was thwarted in my purposes and am now using the public computer with a limit of one hour so I am RUSHING.  Had to make two trips with my crap as they do not have any ramp.  Then was told to move all my stuff because green tablecloth from last night must be removed.  Got all settled in and the wireless wouldn't work.  Library Director went to reset and then it was too slow.  Boy, do I feel ike a library patron.  One setback after another!  So, I could pack it all up and go to another library or I could just break down and buy the Internet for my home!

Had a nice breakfast with my friends, the regular Saturday morning crowd.  Feeling self righteous as I took home half and got fruit instead of potatoes.  Then I went to the health club at the hospital in Bridgeton and worked  out for almost an hour.  We all decided we weren't too enthusiastic about the new name for hospital system.  Now it will be called INSPIRA to compete with VIRTUA and be ready to take over even MORE businesses and they don't even have to be in South Jersey.

Too much going on around here!  Tonight there are so many things going on around here.
- Bay Atlantic Symphony at Cumberland County College
- Lauren Fox singing songs of Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell (that is were I am going)
- Bowling for Columbine with satellite interview with Michael Moore - 6:30 at Ashley McCormick center

My home away from home

It used to be my CAR but now it is the Fitness Connection in Vineland, New Jersey.  It was hard getting through the workout today.  Now I am on to the FUN part of the day, computer time at the Millville Public Library.  Unfortunately, Playlist.com is acting up again, thus impacting my happiness.  Listened to some snippets from the movie Silver linings playbook and realized that the song I liked is called Unsquare dance, by Dave Brubeck.

Each day I look at NEXT BLOG on Google for a couple of blogs.  Seem to be a lot of religious people blogging and a lot of families.  I don't know what I am, but not those.  I also have blogs under my favorites on my computer and some on my blog reader on Google.  I try to delete ones that are not up to date, no matter how intresting they are.  A lot of abandoned blogs, too.

Happy National foreign language week (March 4-10) and National nutrition month...two of my interests.  Speaking of nutrition, made a vow to start eating more (some) vegetables.  They just happened to have a display on this topic at the health club so I picked up some handouts.  Feeling somewhat proud of myself for my lunch - grapefruit and avocado and pecans and salad dressing.  Trying mightily to not eat the OTHER cookie in the bag I cracked open.  ONE of them is 100 calories and that is my self-imposed limit for snacks.
Why do they put TWO of them in the packet?  Temptation.....

A satisfactory spread

I only watched the end of the Academy awards and, of course, I was only rooting for the films I had SEEN, such as Silver linings playbook (twice), Amour and Lincoln.  I liked the fact that it wasn't a sweep by any one film.  That always makes me feel bad for the losers.  Seth McFarland and Kristen Chenowith sang a song "To the losers" as the closing credits went by.  I'd like to watch that again on Youtube?  Was happy about Daniel Day Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence wins.  (I'm in love with her and he is AMAZING)

Missed the first part of the awards as I went to a comedy show with a friend from work.  Paula Poundstone did not disappoint.  There was a good audience which always helps.  You never know when you live in Cumberland County.  We have TOO MANY VENUES right now, a lot of competition in the performing arts.  She was hilarious from start to finish and it totally seemed like ad-libbing, with a lot of audience interaction, especially the front row (but she didn't get down to us)  She talked about being bad with computers.  She likes the laptop cause "you can go door-to-door begging for help".

Audiobook review: Hand of evil, by J.A. Jance, read by Karen Ziemba.  This was a browsng choice as I never read J. A. Jance before.  Not sure if I will again.  There were two stories going, an interaction with an old friend who is acting weird and a runaway teen daughter of another friend.  The runaway was highly annoying and I found myself getting frustrated with a lot of the behavior of the characters and their lies and just not saying what was really going on.  Also a lot of saying one thing and doing another.  I got this audiobook at the Bridgeton Public Library (AUDB M JANCE)
