What did we do before the Internet?

I should know that. I am a librarian. It has been sad to see the inexorable neglect of our reference collections of books. And, yes, I am guilty myself. When was the last time I actually looked at some of my favorite tomes, such as The statesman's yearbook or The encyclopedia of associations?

So, today, here is some of what I have been looking up:
- What is the name of the symbol that Prince, the musician, used as his name? I drew how I thought it looked and thought maybe it was called Ankara. Well, no, Ankara is a city in Turkey. Prince's symbol is unpronounceable but sometimes known as the LOVE symbol. It is a combination of the male symbol, the female symbol and the symbol for alchemy.
- How to grow poppies like I saw in Italy and are all poppies opium poppies?
- Why do I have a metallic taste in my mouth? There could be many reasons, but if the reason is unknown, it is called IDIOPATHIC DYSGEUSIA.

Finished an audio book, Seeds of hope : wisdom and wonder from the world of plants, by Jane Goodall (from the Millville Public Library - AUBK 580 Goo). Yes, that is the chimpanzee woman. She has many more interests. Talks about our relationships with trees and trees relationships with each other. Also clear cutting, rain forests, herbal remedies, how people ruin everything for greed, and GMO's, to just name a few of the topics covered. She travels most of the year giving talks. I found it interesting but hard to get through. Not exactly scintillating. And she actually reads all of the credits and thanks at the end. That was truly boring, but I stuck with it. I liked best the trees parts.

I couldn't sleep at ALL last night

I know that is from a song, but...reasons I couldn't sleep:
1. Was too hot (predicted temp of 57 degrees low last night. I think my PJ's and socks were too warm). Now need a new weather obsession. Looking at low for night could tell me how many BLANKETS to put on bed. I already have COATS that I wear when it is in the 30's, 40's or 50's during the day.
2. Ate too much provolone cheese before bed. I have not overcome my nighttime eating problem. Of course, taking Ambien does not help with that. And I have a provolone addition. One pound of sliced cheese can last me one or two days. I HAVE overcome my ice cream addiction by going cold turkey and probably that is the only reason I have lost weight.
3. Disorderly neighbors. Aggravating newish tenants across the street, including kids, vulgar, loud woman, and angry man. Police are called to the scene at least weekly and loud cursing can be heard from inside my home.

Books recently finished:

1. Leaf man, by Lois Ehlert. This is a children's book called to my intention by a promotional bookmark. A story for young children is illustrated by characters made entirely of leaves. Why didn't I think of that? I might have to BUY this book, it is just so darn clever and made me think of my mommy, who appreciated all beautiful stuff of nature. On the end papers, various leaves are identified and on the flyleaf are examples of leaves found by the author's friends such as "mystery leaf, found on ground in front of folk art museum, San Diego, California." I borrowed this book from the Bridgeton Public Library (E EHLERT).

Every love story is a ghost story : a life of David Foster Wallace, by D. T. Max - Not sure if I have even READ a book by DFW. Had to borrow this biography through the Cumberland County Library. He was a character and had a lot of girlfriends and some mental and drug issues and is considered a genius of a writer. He killed himself when he was in his forties. I ended up having to skim in order to return the book on time, so missed some details near the end. Even the notes looked kind of interesting.

The child's child, by Ruth Rendell writing as Barbara Vine. This book was recommended to me, but I didn't really like it that much. The people were not real sympathetic and were trapped. It treated issues of out-of-wedlock children, homosexuality, and people using people. Some of the users aggravated me. And by the end, I had forgotten the beginning, which treated some of the same issues, but in a more modern time. Again, I had to rush throught the end as book was overdue at the Vineland Public Library (MYS Vine Barbara)

Reasons to go to the beach

Love the deserted beach. I had to run down to Ocean City as my book is due today. Read The love affairs of Nathanial P., by Adelle Waldman. From the perspective of Nate, a male writer living in Brooklyn in 1999. It's fiction.

Anyway, the beach was amazing. Tide coming in, waves roiling all which ways. Foam was blowing across the beach, it was so windy. I was enjoying all of the tracks, footprints, tire prints, shells, etc. Just took a ten minute walk. It was a bit too cold for sunbathing. I look over and there is a woman coming out of the ocean in her bathing suit!

So I came over to get my three hours of computer time at the library. Am cold and hungry right now. Should stick around to read a newspaper and a magazine. Inconsistencies of myself: I am too cheap to buy a book for the Nook, yet I will shell out $1 a day for an actual newspaper.

The death of a tree

This is my license plate because I am opposed to the murder of trees.  This tree was just standing there, minding its own business, and a branch fell down.  So, the owner of the tree decided to KILL the entire tree to avoid any future problems of this nature.  This tree is going to leave a big gap in my view. It offers a lot of protection from the neighbors. Sad.. I have just been glad that not-my-tree fell on not-my-car.  I just drove off like I didn't have a care in the world.

My playlist.com seems to have finally bit the dust.  Can't log in and probably have lost my list of over one hundred songs. I received an email saying that they got in trouble and had to change the format.  Sigh....I liked it because it WASN'T a radio format.  Now have switched to YouTube, though the pictures aren't that important to me.

Yesterday I went to a class on Picasa, which some of the students insisted on calling Picasso. The other annoying thing about the other students was the woman who kept saying, "Gotcha!"  Doesn't she know that I HATE that word?!  I liked the button that said Publish to blogger. Picasa is only one of many photo management programs. It is related to Google.   But since it now is the one which caught my attention, I plan to try it out.  If I am seriously going to get back into photography, I should be able to practice with my LG rumor phone, which is all I have at the moment.

Dancers wanted

One of the many changes I noticed yesterday as I was driving down Delsea Drive was that one of the "jinxed" properties is reopening as Double D Gentleman's club and they want dancers.  I know a few jobs available and I know a few people looking but they do not match.  I am sure there will be lots of "gentlemen" in there.

Running out of options to avoid the heat. Went to the pool for an exercise  class (aqua aerobics) and came to the library.  Didn't use the computers at the pool because there is an older man who monopolizes them and I don't want to be near him.  Ever since the day when he knew I was waiting for the computer and he paused during his FACEBOOK session to watch some TV, just like someone who didn't have a care in the world.  So, just my luck, that SAME MAN is getting a card at the Millville Public Library and sat down right across from me.  Running out of time, anyway and you have to BEG for more time.  The librarian only gave me 1/2 hour.  Can't wait to get home where there is only ME, MYSELF and I.  Too hot to go out shopping for a dehumidifier which I desparately need.  Also my back is "out" and I cannot carry a heavy piece of equipment.  My purse is even more than I can carry.

What to do when the weather forecast is 95-100 degrees for the next four days?  I DETEST such weather.

A lot of spawning going on

Attended the re-dedication of the sign for the Fortescue horseshoe crab habitat, the first official horseshoe crab sanctuary in New Jersey.  Due to Hurricane Sandy, the sign was damaged.  There were plenty of horseshoe crabs spawning and we learned the appropriate way to HELP them if they get stuck in the sand.  One should never pick up a crab by the tail.  Pick it up from the side and just orient it so it can get back to the bay.  It was like an ORGY. Up to 14 males can attach to a female to fertilize the eggs. A female typically lays about 25 egg clusters each year.  Each cluster contains about 4000 eggs.  But only a small amount ever reach adulthood.  Some horseshoe crabs live twenty years, but it takes about 10 years before they can mate. Since I can't figure out how to get pics off of my phone, I had to steal this photo from someone in Maryland.

Group of spawning horseshoe crabs on beach

Rushing today as had to use the Bridgeton Public Library computers.  They only give ONE hour and there is no room to put my STUFF.  But, they are the only library open on Thursday evening.

My trip is coming up and I don't have a plan for taking pictures.  I am getting in the mood to do that.

MY most beautiful women

Gwyneth Paltrow was just voted the world's most beautiful woman.  So I thought I would add MY most beautiful women:
- Fergie
- Beyonce
- Jennifer Lawrence
- Queen Latifah

Can't really think of my choices for most beautiful man.  What does that say about me?  Alright....

- Legaloslegolas photo: Legolas legolas.jpg
- Sawyer in Lost
- Brad Pitt in the olden days
- George Clooney

Gorgeous day today.  Weather is fine, plants are blooming, all sorts of purple things confusing me.
I took two walks already today.  I learned at the recent lecture that I should be doing 30 minutes of CARDIO 5 days a week.  So will have a new statistic at the end of each day.  Minutes of cardio over total minutes of exercise for the WEEK.  Yoga and arthritis exercise don't really count for CARDIO.

Woof-woof-woof woof woof woof

Aaurgh!  Up in the night with that damn dog barking.  I actually got up and got dressed and went out at 1:11 PM to find out where it was.  Turns out it was the Mexicans right in back of me.  Now whenever I hear it, I have to time it and call the police after 15 minutes.  Why would you put a loudly barking dog outside in the middle of the night when respectable people are sleeping?!?!?  Neighbors...I hate'em.

Azeleas blooming and lilacs!  How wonderful.

I think I have accomplished the important planning for my upcoming trip.  My God, but it is time consuming.
I think I can rest easy now.  Have the airplane, the excursion AND the hotel.  As for what I am doing day to day, that can wait.

Tulip time!

I love it.  Went for a walk down the street and sat on a bench.  I needed a break from a day on the computer.  The breezes were wafting and the trees were rustling and there is not much traffic in Greenwich, New Jersey.  The weather is finally perfect enough to go with the constant sunshine.

Hanging out at a historical society today.  My guilty secret is that I am not even thinking about history.  Just being with a convivial group and using my laptop.
Actually I am thinking about Paris.  Taking notes from Fodor's Paris 2011 to remind myself what I want to do when I get there next.

Last week was a crazy week.  Personally, with the taxes undone, losing my passport, my neighbor chopping down a beautiful tree and then there was Boston and the Ricin and Texas.  Of course, then there was also the FINDING of the passport and getting to spend an entire day with an old friend, so it wasn't ALL bad.

What did I do for Earth day?

- I sent an ecard to someone who has a birthday today wishing her a happy Earth Day AND birthday.
- I picked up trash around the outside of my house.  None of it mine. Cigarette butts and other disgusting stuff.
- Going to a free film about the problems of the horseshoe crab and the redknot.  It is called Crash and will be showing at 6 PM at the Levoy theater in Millville.

My wish list has once again disappeared from Overdrive.  This is very aggravating as this is where I go when I need a new book for my Nook.  I have a theory and will investigate it.  Not that I don't already have enough books to read.

Feeling overwhelmed with my computer chores.  My folder of stuff to look up is getting thicker.  And my old emails more than a year old are looking too interesting to delete.  Seems like the past few days I have just been trying to fit in an hour here, and hour there and getting nowhere.

Millville, the next best thing to Washington, DC?

I am referring to the cherry blossoms I saw everywhere on the way to the Millville Public Library today.  It is grey and raining but they still looked beautiful.  Never in my life have I planned a trip or gotten to DC at the right time for the cherry blossoms.

Paris, here I come?  I am seriously "vacation planning impaired" but now I have a goal, albeit a bit late.  Some friends are going to be in Paris and have invited me to stay with them for a few days.  Can I do it?  Can I overcome my terror of any price over $1000 and actually commit?

In a rush today.  If I devote ENOUGH time to exercise and online activities, there is practically no time left over.  Thus, I find myself in a fix with my taxes incomplete.  Now, this is not uncommon as the earliest I have EVER filed is April 14th.  I used to say I was doing it so as to have compassion for the library patrons who would be rushing into the library at 8:45 PM on April 15th yelling, "What form do I need?"  It makes me anxious to realize that I will have limited time for my OTHER important activities from now until I am finished.  I don't believe in extensions, because I know myself well enough to know that I would need an extension to the extension.  Unfotunately, I have MANY plans for activities in the next few days.

Going private

Trying to figure out how to take this blog private.  I am sure I saw it go by once but HELP is not helping me.

Saw my first azalea blooming today.  What a riotous week of exploding colors and hot weather.  My audiobook talked about "the wafting scent of the forsythia".  I stopped by the side of the road and I sniffed.  Just as I suspected, forsythia HAS no scent.

No luck trying to copy photos from phone over to here.  My phone automatically sends it to Yahoo email.  Copy and paste does not work.  Wanted to show some photos from Victorian house art tour I went on last night.  My friend has 3 story home and yard FULL of whimsy and beauty...art from Africa, Australia, Japan and Cumberland County, New Jersey.  Her home is in Newport, a quaint, quiet little town.

At least there's no zombie apocalypse

There is a Zombie run in Philadelphia on Sunday.  250 zombie spots have been filled.  I think they are going to CHASE the runners?  The woman on NPR said that no matter what problems we may all have, we can at least feel good about the fact that there is no zombie apocalypse!

The birds are enjoying the back yard.  Even more than usual due to my neighbor's "tarting up" of the back yard?  Or maybe just because it is Spring?  I am enjoying the back yard more too.  My yard energy only goes so far as my one window box.  (I have three pansies planted there that I got for free at the recent SICC dinner).  We have a taller, better water container, some suet I got for free from the Amish Market (!), bare sticks that my neighbor thinks will bloom and become hydrangeas, lots of statues, benches, empty pots and stuff planted here and there.  Don't know how my yard guy will mow what with all that STUFF.  But, anyway, I read first that my yard guy was arrested for having a stun gun and just a few days ago, he was PUT IN JAIL for filing a false police report.  What are these guys UP TO?  They are very polite and religious when talking to me.

Going to a British tea today.  There seems to be some difference of opinion about how to dress.  A man friend told me they wear dresses and hats and then he gave me a book about teas and two teacups to take along.  Then we saw someone going in wearing a pants suit.  I am so reluctant to dress up.   In fact, I seem to be going around all the time wearing my exercise clothes.  Today it was with false hopes about fitting in some exercise.  Too busy going out to breakfast, shopping for stuff to make fruit sticks for a reunion tomorrow, dealing with phone messages and now using the computer at the Cumberland County Library.  All out of time!
